Light Bars & Wash Lights – LED wall-grazing products

InStyle’s range of LED light bars and wash lights offer a simple, convenient way to add striking wall-washes and wall-graze effects to interior and exterior locations.

Wall Washing or Wall Grazing?

While the terms ‘wall-washing’ and ‘wall-grazing’ are often used interchangeably, they refer to two different effects. The distinction between them is the space between the light-source and the vertical surface to be illuminated.

Wall grazing

Positioning the light-source very close to the wall (no more than 30cm / 12 inches) means its illumination won’t spread evenly, across the whole wall. Instead, you’ll get a high-intensity area of light that fades to nothing around the edges. This effect, typically oval- or bulb-shaped, is sometimes called ‘light scalloping’.

Wall-grazing is often used to highlight materials and architectural features, and to bring out special textures (brickwork, glass, tiling etc). Mounted objects and protrusions will cast unwanted shadows, so any such walls are best avoided.

Our compact (4-bulb) and mid-size (8-bulb) LED wash lights are particularly suited to wall-graze features in rooms with ceilings 9’ high or less.

Wall washing

The goal of a wall-wash effect is to evenly illuminate an entire section of wall. To achieve this, the light-source should be fitted some distance from the vertical surface – roughly a third of the wall’s height is a good rule of thumb.

Wall-washers produce a more ambient effect than wall-grazing. Ideally, it creates a smooth surface glow, eliminating flaws and shadows, or simply creating a coloured feature. Glossy walls often create unwanted reflections; light, matte-finish surfaces are best for wall-washing.
