LED Tape lights controlled – IR vs RF remote – Which one is better and why?

When you are looking to purchase your LED Lighting there are many things to choose from and control is a major factor, especially if you are purchasing the RGB Colour Changing LED Tape. If you have finally decided on looking to use a wireless controller, you must then decide on which type of controller you would like. The wireless controllers are available in all shapes and sizes, however one thing that may keep popping up in the description of the controllers is one of the terms either IR or RF. What exactly do they mean and which should you choose and why?

Here is an overview of both options of control for your wireless controller which should help you choose which option is right for you.

IR Remote control:
IR stands for Infra-red. This is a type of signal tends to be used in most home entertainment remote because of its low cost and ease of use. With infra-red the wireless remote needs to be ‘line of site’ with the receiver for it to work with a maximum distance of around 10m. If you try and use the remote control from another room, with any object in the way then the infra-red remote and receiver simply will not work.

RF Remote control:
RF stands for Radio Frequency. Each remote control would be set up to it’s own frequency level meaning they will not interfere with other RF controllers. The main advantage of RF remote controllers is that the controller does not need to be ‘line of site’ with the receiver to work. The wireless controllers usually work up to around 20m away from the receiver even if the receiver is in a cupboard or in another room. With RF controllers you can also have Multizones, this means you can have many receivers all working from one wireless remote control making them ideal for larger applications.

Multizone RF RGB Controller Receivers

Which to choose?
Here at InStyle LED we only supply RF remote controls due to the massive advantages over IR remotes. The main one being no ‘line of site’ is required from the controller to the receiver. IR remote controls would be ideal for a small job on a budget for personal use. RF remote controllers would be ideal for home use as well as commercial use, such as Hotels, Bars and Restaurants. With the fact that the RF remote can also link multiple zones together wirelessly this is  ideal for larger applications.
