White LED tape range

Our white LED lights – also known as white LED tape, LED strips or LED ribbon – are our best selling and most popular products. They’re a flexible light source that can be installed almost anywhere.

Every metre of LED tape has at least 60 diodes (our high-power strips have more) – that’s plenty of LEDs to give a smooth and eye-catching effect to any illuminated surface.

All of InStyle’s white LED lights are supplied on 5m reels as standard. But we also offer a full cutting and preparation service, so we can pre-cut or solder your LED tape order to exactly the lengths your project needs.  And if you’re working on a bathroom or an exterior project, we also offer a waterproof (IP67 certified) option of all our LED tapes.

White LED lights are ideal for domestic use, clubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, signage and many other applications. With five different brightness levels available, InStyle LED can supply what you need for all your lighting projects. You’ll find that our 5W or 10W per metre 12-volt LED lights are perfect for covings and feature lighting applications – while our 12W, 20W or 24W p.m. strips are great for working lights, general lighting and replacing fluorescent tubes.

To drive your strip lights, we’ll supply a suitable LED transformer (either 12v or 24v) that’s powerful enough for your installation. Like InStyle’s other products, all of our LED strips are commercial grade, which means they’re manufactured using premium components and diodes.

What lengths do white LED lights come in?

All of our white LED tape range is manufactured and supplied on 5m reels as standard. But you can choose how you want to purchase your LED strips from us – there’s a variety of ways you can order, to suit your needs.

  • You can buy your LED light strips in 5m reels as standard, then cut and solder them to the lengths you require yourself (if you’re happy to undertake soldering).
  • If you’d prefer to avoid soldering, then we can supply clip-on connectors to join your tape lengths. These connectors enable you to cut then extend your white LED lights to the lengths you require with no soldering required.
  • Or why not simply tell us the lengths you require when you place your order – and InStyle LED will do all the cutting and soldering for you. (For simple orders, there’s no extra cost). InStyle will even add extra starter-leads, measured and cut to the length you want, and we can also solder link-cables into your white LED light strips, so you can install around corners or other obstacles.

Are white LED strip lights flexible?

Yes, all of our white LED tapes are extremely flexible. This makes them ideal for use is a wide variety of projects, including outdoor applications like signage.

Even our waterproof white LED strip lights are very flexible.

See our support page about the flexibility of LED tape products for more information.

Can I cut LED light strips myself?

Yes you can. All of our white LED strips have cut points clearly marked on them. Simply use a pair of household scissors to cut to the length you require, along the lines indicated by small scissor symbols. Be sure to have the LED strip disconnected before you cut it.

Cut points are spaced at different intervals, depending on the white LED tape product you have chosen:

5W cut points:Every 50mm
10W cut points:Every 25mm
12W cut points:Every 100mm
20W cut points:Every 50mm
24W cut points:Every 50mm

(N.B. If you are using waterproof LED strips, please be aware that cutting them will damage the strip’s heatshrink protection. You will need to reseal the end of the tape with a glue-gun after cutting. Or why not ask us to pre-cut your waterproof white LED tapes to the length you need when you order – and we’ll handle all the heatshrinking and glued ends for you!)

Do you offer LED tape extrusions?

Yes – InStyle LED offer LED tape extrusions (LED profiles) that you can mount your white LED lights in.

We have a range of LED extrusions that are manufactured to hold any of our LED tapes. They include

All of our extrusions are available in 1-metre and 2-metre lengths. You can cut them more precisely to the length you require by simply using a hack saw.

How much brightness do I need?

There’s a choice of white LED tape wattages available, each giving a different level of light output to suit your needs. We describe our LED strips by the wattage they draw per metre. So when choosing white LED strips, you should compare them by wattage and lumen output per metre, rather than simply counting the number of LEDs on the strip.

There are five wattages to choose from:

Our 5-watt 12 volt LED lights are our best seller – just because they are our lowest wattage doesn’t mean they’re not powerful; these white strips are very bright compared to other LED lighting. 5-watt 12V LED light strips are ideal for feature lighting – they’re great for highlighting covings, back bars, front desks etc. Our 10w strips are also ideal for feature lights, especially in areas where there is a lot of ambient light (daylight). The 10w is perfect to highlight areas, halos, signage etc.

The 15w and 20w per metre white LED tapes are ideal ‘working lights’. They’re also perfect for areas with a lot of ambient light (daylight), and can be used as under kitchen cabinets etc. The 15w and 20w tapes – along with our very bright 24w tapes – are also ideal to light up areas such as front bars, back bars or front desks and reception areas. (Typically, we don’t recommend 24w LEDs for domestic applications – their high brightness will overwhelm all but the very larget homes!)

We also offer an optic extrusion for our LED light strips that ‘throws the light further’; combined with a 24 volt LED strip power supply (used by 12w, 20w or 24w strips), this makes an ideal low-cost wall washer.

What LED tape should I use to replace my traditional incandescent/halogen bulbs?

The infographic below compares the lumens output by a single traditional bulb to the output of one metre of LED strip lighting. Incandescent and halogen lamps have no optic lens to narrow their beam, so they produce a wide spread of light. Because LED strip lights also produce a wide beam (approx. 120 degrees), this is a good rule-of-thumb comparison.

Do you offer a warranty on your white LED tapes?

Yes. Every InStyle LED strip and LED power supply is supplied with a 2-year warranty.

See our warranty support page for more information.

Can you supply waterproof LED light strips?

Waterproof LED light strips allow you to install in locations where resistance to water is required, for example kitchens, bathrooms etc. They can also be fitted externally, making them ideal for signage. At InStyle, we can supply waterproof LED tapes to meet the needs of your project.

Any of our white LED tapes are available in either:

  • a standard (non waterproof) version,
  • with an IP65-rated heatshrink coating,
  • or as IP67 waterproof white LED light strips.

For our IP65 LED products, we use a heatshrink coating that offers many advantages over traditional resin coatings: it does not discolour over time, it doesn’t go brittle in the cold,  and it is easy to cut and solder.

For our IP67 LED products, we start with the same heatshrink coating… and we then fully glue seal the tape ends. An IP67 rating means your LED tape is waterproof but please be aware that it should not be fitted in a location that’s permanently submerged under water, for example in a pond.

If you’re planning to install waterproof LED strips, you can find more information, tips and advice on our support page.

Can you supply dual-white CCT LED lights?

Colour-temperature changing (CCT) LEDs are a great new technology that enables you can mix a nearly endless variety of white-light shades. InStyle’s 24W CCT LED strip lights use high quality Epistar branded dual-white LEDs – each one housing both a warm-white and a pure-white diode. With this combination and a suitable CCT LED controller, you can create the perfect white-light tone for your home or business.

Find out more about CCT LEDs on our inVyci dual-white CCT LED control-system page.

Are white LED light strips easy to install?

Yes they are. Installing LED strips, as well as their power supplies and controllers, is a very simple job for any electrician.

InStyle LED’s sales reps are extremely knowledgeable, and we can give you all the advice and support you need to choose them right products and install them without fuss. Why not ask us to pre-cut and solder all your 12-volt or 24-volt white LED lights to the lengths that you require when you place your order? We’ll even solder in additional starter-leads and link cables to go around corners.

Can I connect my white LED strip lights without soldering?

Yes, we offer three different types of solderless connectors:

  • We have tape-to-tape connectors that join two pieces of LED tape together once they have been cut.
  • We also have tape-to-starter-lead connectors, these are used to attach a lead to the strip for you to easily extend and join to a dimmer unit or LED power supply.
  • Lastly, we can supply flexible link-cable connectors, which are ideal if you’re installing in locations where your LED tape has to go around corners or obstructions.

We have a full guide showing how to use solderless connectors in our support section.

What is the difference between 3528 and 5050 SMDs?

If you’ve been reading up on white LED light strips, then you may have come across the terms ‘3528’ and ‘5050 SMDs’ quite a lot.

This is because 3528s and 5050s are the two main types of LED SMDs (surface-mounted diodes) used in the manufacture of LED tapes. One type of diode is not better than the other; the right choice depends on the application that you’re using them for.

3528 SMDs get their name because their LEDs are 3.5mm x 2.8mm. In the same way, 5050 SMDs are 5mm x 5mm in size.

3528 SMDs are less bright and pull less power than 5050 SMDs. (A 5050 SMD is approximately 3x brighter and draws 3x more power than a 3528 SMDs.)

InStyle’s advisors typically recommend our 3528 LED tapes for feature lighting applications, such as covings and plinths. Choose our LED tapes with 5050 SMDs for applications where more light is required (such as under-cabinet lighting or ‘working lights’).

See our blog on comparing the two types of SMDs here.3528 chip and 5050 chip

How do I fit my white LED strips? Where should I position my white LED strips?

All of our white LED strip lights come with 3M self-adhesive backing already attached. All you need to do is clean the surface to which the LED tape will be fixed, then peel and stick the strip into place.

(When pushing down on your 12-volt / 24-volt white LED light strips, be sure to press on the PCB rather than the resistors or LEDs.)

For more information on mounting and installing our tape please see our detailed blog here. Or see our support article that explains how to find the best position for your LED strips on tricky projects like drop ceilings, kitchen plinths, under cabinets, etc.

Do all white LED strip lights look the same? What shades of white LED are available?

InStyle LED stock several shades of white LED as standard for each wattage, and we can even manufacture a specific shade to your bespoke requirements. Our standard white range includes:

  • warm white LEDs
  • neutral white / daylight white LEDs
  • pure white / white LEDs

Color temperature and the Kelvin scale

We measure the colour temperature of our white-light shades the Kelvin scale (see image below). The Kelvin value of a particular white shade indicates how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ its colour is. InStyle’s warehouse has our full range of white lights in stock for next-day delivery – all the way from warm white LED light strips (2700k) to 6500k cool whites.

Warm white LED light strips have a slight yellow/brown tint (making them ideal as an addition to or replacement for traditional halogen bulbs), and they give any location a warm, homely feel. Pure white LED strips are more cool and less earthy, without a ‘warm’ tint. They are often used as highlights, and in commercial or retail applications.

Why not try our white-light comparison tool to see which shade is best for your home, business or other location?

Please note that we offer LED light strips and LED drivers in either 12 volt or 24 volt LED lights. Wiring up an LED strip power supply with the wrong voltage will damage your LED tape. So please check that the voltage from your LED power supply is the same as your LED tape’s input voltage before you connect them up.

When considering white LED lighting, you may think it would be a very simple choice as there is only one option…white?
Wrong! There are actually different various shades of white to choose from.

The three main shade descriptions of whites are:

  • Warm White (also known as soft white) – being described as warm white LED lights does not mean that your LED tape is warm to touch. When we say ‘warm LED lights’, we’re actually describing the shade of white the LED light strips will produce. A warm white LED strip tends to be a slightly yellow/brown in colour just like your standard halogen light bulbs. Warm white LED lights are often used to give a warm, homely feel. The technical specification of warm LED lights is anything from 2700k – 3200k (lower being warmer)
  • Pure White (also known as daylight white, commercial white, bright white) – this is the closest resemblance to daylight white, it tends not to have any yellow (warm) or blue (cool) tint to it. This is used in commercial applications and also to highlight areas; it is generally brighter than warm LED lights. On the Kelvin scale pure white would be anything from 4500k to 6000k (lower being warmer)
  • Cool White – this white is used the least out of the 3 as it is generally too ‘cool’ (blue tint) for commercial and general use. However it is the brightest white and can be used to highlight areas. It still looks very white and the blue tint is extremely faint. Cool white LED tape is a great way to create a cool, crisp feel. On the Kelvin scale this would be 6500k+

To work out the size of LED strip power supply that you’ll need is very easy. Simply take the length of LED tape you have (in metres) and multiply this by the wattage of the LED tape you have (also per metre).

For example… 7 metres of 4.8w 12V LED light strips: 7 x 4.8w = 33.6w. So you would require an LED power supply that outputs over 33.6 watts. In practice, that’s a 60w LED strip driver.

Like other single-colour LEDs, you can dim your white LED light strips can in various ways.

One very simple option is to use a dimmable LED power supply. These transformers are available for 12 volt LED lights /24 volt LED lights, in 30w and 100w versions. They can then be dimmed through a standard TRIAC wall dimmer (typically compatible in households).

We also have TRIAC dimmable receivers; these go in-between the transformer and LED light strips. They work with both 12 volt LED lights and 24 volt LED lights, and are ideal for larger projects that use larger transformers such as the 320w.

Another option is with our 0-10v receivers, these can be used for both 12 volt LED lights and the 24 volt version as well. They go in-between the LED strip power supply and the LED tape and can be linked to such systems as Lutron or HDL.

We also have the option to dim via DMX. We have DMX receivers available to work with DMX desks and systems to allow you to fully dim as required. Again these go in-between the Transformers and LED tape and can be linked together to dim all the receivers at once.

For a simple LED tape installation, you’ll  just need an LED power supply (transformer) to get things working. You connect the 2-core starter lead coming out of one end. This is then wired to the transformer, red wire goes to + and the black wire is wired to -. The 2-core cable can be extended as required for you to mount the transformer as far away as required.

Deciding on which wattage you should use depends on the kind of location in which you’re installing your LED light strips.

The 5w and 10w is ideal to be used as feature lighting. Lighting to highlight areas, as a secondary lighting. Ideal for covings, drop-down ceilings, signage etc. to give a smooth halo effect. The 10w would be preferred to the 5w for these applications if there is a high amount of ambient lighting.

The 15w and 20w is ideal to be used as general lighting or as feature lighting for areas larger than covings etc. For example washing down front bars / back bars / under kitchen cabinet lighting as ‘working light’

IP67 heatshrink-coated LED lights are required in locations where you need resistance to water. For example bathrooms, kitchens and exterior installations. Our heatshrink light strips are waterproof, although they cannot be permanently submerged (they’re not suitable underwater in ponds, for example). The IP67 heatshrink is a protective coating over the LED tape, which also makes it easy to wipe to clean etc.
All of our white LED light strips are cuttable. Each can be cut at various points, either 50mm, 100mm, 150mm or 200mm depending on which version (wattage) you have. We can either cut your light strips to the specific lengths you need, or you can do this yourself.

Once they are cut to length, you can either solder your LED light strips to a transformer, or we can supply two types of easy-click clips. One type is a starter-lead clip, which is a clip with a cable from the end of the LED strip for connection to the transformer. The second type of clip is a tape-to-tape connector, this clip joins two pieces together.
