What are RGBW downlights / spotlights?

Check out our new vlog.

What are RGBW downlights / spotlights?

  • RGBW downlights are LED fittings that can create a huge range of light colours (using a controller) by mixing Red, Green , Blue and White light at source.  They typically fit into MR16 / GU10 downlighter rings to shine down a wall or surface. Capped with a tight-beam optic lens, they create a distinctive ‘shoot’ of light. Depending on the controller chosen, you can have several downlights controlled together or individually. Several downlights can be linked in series, wired back to a single power supply.
  • RGBW spotlights is a term for the same LED product, but mounted using a bracket rather than recessed. This offers the option to angle the fitting onto any surface, and create a ‘spot’ of feature lighting.

Where can they be used?

Downlight / spotlight fittings can be used anywhere. Because these are commercial grade high-power 12w fittings, they’re ideal for washing walls or surfaces. They can be used in areas such as hotel function room, night clubs, bars, restaurants and homes to create ambient mood lighting.

How are they wired?

This all depends on which controller you are using, and how many. Downlights / spotlights are wired in series, and you can link as many fittings as you require in a row as long as you have electrical cables of sufficient thickness. InStyle LED can advise you on wiring requirements.

You can have several downlights linked back to one power supply. (We even offer large power supplies, able to power up to 40 fittings from one power supply!)

How many downlights do I need?

This depends on your project and budget. As a general guide, if you have a large wall and you wish to create a wash effect all the way along, then you should have them spaced around 1m apart.

If you are looking for more of a ‘light-shoots’ effect, then you would space them more widely, maybe 2m apart.

How are they controlled?

We have many different control options for your downlights.

You can choose remote controls, wall controllers and even wifi control. You can have single-zone or multizone control, enabling control of one area or multiple areas individually or fully synchronised. We also have a large range of different control protocols to work with home automation systems or controllers, such as  DMX, 0-10V, and Dali.

Can InStyle downlights work with my home automation system?

Yes they can. We stock many different receivers to work with any home automation system, including  Dali, DMX and 0-10V protocols.

What is the difference between RGB and RGBW?

RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue LEDs. RGBW stands for Red, Green, Blue and White.  The benefit of RGBW fittings is that you have a dedicated white LED, enabling you to mix pastel colours and truer whites. We offer two types of RGBW; our customers can choose either a cool white or warm white LED, to fit the look and location of their project.

Why InStyle LED?

We stock all of these LED downlights for next day delivery.

You can provide us with a sketch of your area and we can advise on how many downlights you’ll require to achieve your desired effect. We can also advise on the most cost-effective control options, and which products are needed to work with any home automation systems.

We can speak to your installers or electricians, to answer any questions – before, during and after your project.
